The shape and balance change the decision
Penso describes the standard 2024 Vertex 04 as an attacking diamond and the Hybrid as closer to a teardrop with lower balance. They share much of the construction described in the source, so this is not simply a choice between unrelated core materials. The handling difference is central: compare how quickly you can prepare the racket as well as what happens after clean contact.
Standard for attack, with a defensive bill
Penso likes the standard’s responsive attacking play and precise central contact, but finds its sweet spot relatively small and defence more technical than with softer alternatives. He also finds the 04 easier to move than the Vertex 03 available in his test, without saying it is automatically more powerful. That is a useful warning against treating a newer number as an improvement in every direction.
Hybrid for the exchange before the finish
The Hybrid earns Penso’s praise for manoeuvrability, quick exchanges and placement. In return, he finds less intensity in aggressive shots and says smashes need more effort to match the standard diamond. If your game depends on defending and getting a playable volley back, that can be a sensible exchange. If you rely on attacking weight to finish, make sure the lower balance does not remove the feature you wanted.
Try the same difficult feed
Compare a low block at the back and a fast volley into the body, then finish with overheads. Pay attention to whether the standard’s attacking gain survives the first two exercises. With Hybrid, ask whether you can produce the finish you need without overswinging. Keep any adjustable weights consistent and know the configuration of the demo rackets before attributing every difference to the model.
This is not Vertex 04 versus Vertex 05
The evidence here concerns two 2024 Vertex 04 variants tested together by Penso, in an article credited to Xan Tafernaberry. It does not transfer to a 2026 Vertex 05 or to other Comfort and lightweight variants. Read the original paired review and the two exact-edition profiles before matching a shop listing.
